One tree Hill in Auckland was a 182 meter volcanic peak that commanded pride for 125 years before it was cut down in 2000 out of fear that the tree may die and fall down. The hill is also referred to as Maungakiekie, which literally means'hill of the kikie vine'. Several maoari tribes in the Auckland area are believed to have originated here. The area around this hill is also known as one tree hill. Efforts have been made towards planting another tree in the same place. Features of One Tree Hill in Auckland: - One tree hill offered amazing sights of the Auckland area and harbors of Auckland. - The place preserves memorials of Maori and the people of New Zealand. - Cornwall Park and One Tree Hill Domain have retained the legacy of Sir John Logan Campbell. The grave of Sir John Campbell is found at the hill enclosed by an obelisk. - The obelisk was a symbol of admiration of John Campbell towards the Maoari people. - A pine tree was found next to the obelisk till the year 2000. - During a gala affair in the 1960's, a group of boy scouts caused much damage to one of the two newer pines. The other tree was later attacked by a group of M?ori protesters. - The tree was unable to recover and thus it was felled down. - No tree has been planted as yet in its place. The obelisk still remains and attracts locals and tourists alike. - One Tree Hill is now known as None Tree Hill. - One of the popular Irish bands of all time U2 have a song dedicated in the name of the hill called One Tree Hill in their album The Joshua Tree. This song about the hill was written in the memory of one of the members of the band, who died in a motorcycle accident in Dublin on 3 July, 1986.
