Summer Times Festival is a fun-filled extravaganza ushering the advent of summer and all the goodness associated with it. The festival started 24 years ago by the Christchurch City Council to provide a range of free events and activities for Christchurch and its surrounding communities. Eventually, the program has included the Cathedral Square New Years Eve Party, Classical Sparks, Candlelight Opera and the Teddy Bears Picnic. The latest attractions to join the band are the Summer Theatre, Great Kids Camp-out and Kite Day at New Brighton Beach.

Summer Times is Christchurch’s most popular event of the year, full of exciting events which will tempt you to come out and enjoy the superb open spaces that Christchurch has to offer.

Amidst an excellent weather, the entire Christchurch gets geared up to host a wide range of activities, festivities, concerts and events. It is the time of the year to unwind, relax and entertain.

The Christchurch City Council together with the sponsors offers a long list of fun events and activities.

The calendar includes the old favorites as well as some new additions.

The program opens in Cathedral Square with great entertainment to welcome in the New Year.

There is a special Waitangi Day treat planned with a Kiwi-flavored Classical Sparks featuring Dave Dobbyn and Deborah Wai Kapohe performing in Hagley Park.
Starry Nights, Christchurch’s own version of Broadway, has always been a favorite colorful event.

The year 2006-2007 will see them enthralling the audience with their many number-one hits performing live on the big stage in Hagley Park.

The kids will have a whale of a time as you take them along to experience a night out camping at one of the city’s parks.

See your little ones learning to fly a kite or take them out to enjoy summer in the suburbs and let them learn more about the diverse communities in Christchurch.

Join the family favorite, Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

Head along to the Daffodil Lawn at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens where you can pack a picnic and watch this year’s Summer Theatre production.

The Farewell to the Godwits event will mark the end of summer for 2007 with a special goodbye to the exotic species of birds who migrate over 11,000 km. to their Alaskan breeding grounds for the northern hemisphere summer.
