The Big Model Train Show in Christchurch, one of the major events of the city

Every year the festive occasion draws in 8000 people who enjoy the fascinating
layouts. A delightful shopping experience awaits the visitors at the vibrant
trade stands.
Models railways comprise of garden railways, prototype layouts, tin plate and
collector trains, static displays, and even toys trains.
The main scales range from "N" gauge (1:160) up to "G" gauge (1:24)
The popular themes of the previous shows have had themes such as "Around the
World by Railway" and "Great train journeys around the world". The popular trains
from Europe, USA, Britain as well as New Zealand are shown often.
The colorful function is organized by the Christchurch Model Railway Exhibition
Society which incorporates several model railway clubs and groups in Christchurch.
Benefits and gains from the show are returned to the groups exhibited at the
show. The main objective of the show is promotion and fostering of the pursuit
in Christchurch and the South Island.
The programme takes place at the Pioneer Leisure Center which features facilities
like Sauna, Steam and Spa, 25m Lap Pool, Pioneer Café and Pioneer Sportsmed.
All exhibitors are ushered in to attend the function at the end of the show.
It begins with refreshments after the closing of the show, followed by a dinner,
entertainment and supper.
The event featured speakers including top class modelers, the Railway Heritage
Trust, international travelers in the past.
