Robert McDougall Art Gallery in Christchurch

The Robert McDougall Art Gallery in Christchurch is an art gallery solely dedicated to objects of art and features New Zealand specialties as well as art forms of international fame. The art gallery initially was opened with the name of its founder, Robert McDougall, but in the present scenario is known by the name of Christchurch Art Gallery-Te Puna o Waiwhetu. The Robert McDougall Art Gallery ceased to be the public art gallery of Christchurch and was taken over by the Christchurch Art Gallery.

The Robert McDougall Art Gallery which came into existence in 1932 officially is presently situated at the corner of Worcester Boulevard and Montreal Street.

The Robert McDougall Art Gallery as it was officially known earlier was under the official administration of the Christchurch City Council. The council also took care of the finances of the former Robert McDougall Art gallery.

Robert McDougall Art Gallery has a dedicated committee to look after its official affairs. The committee has eight city councilors and the Mayor along with two co opted members belonging to the Canterbury Society of Arts and the University of Canterbury school of Art.

In 1960, W.S Baverstock was appointed for the post of first director of the gallery. He had been a renowned curator for years.

The Robert McDougall Art Gallery houses a rich collection of European Art belonging to the late nineteenth and early twentieth century era. It consists of oil paintings and water colors of early and contemporary artists of New Zealand, some miniature specimens and graphic art. There is also an exclusive section only for the Canterbury region.

When the Robert McDougall Art Gallery marked its beginning, the Canterbury Society of Arts presented the gallery with a collection of 118 rare and remarkable paintings. the present collection has increased with presentations and gifts from the artists and the common people.
