Hagley Park was laid as a buffer between the farm of the Dean family and the new township of Christchurch. However, later it was included as part of laying the city. Hagley Park in Christchurch was named after the country estate of Lord Lyttelton, chairman of the Canterbury Association. It was later designated as a public park.
