Hagley Park in Christchurch

New Zealand - Auckland - Christchurch - Queenstown - Wellington
Dean family, was one of the early settlers in Christchurch in New Zealand, who first initiated the project of planting trees in this area. The spot where they landed in Christchurch along Avon River, is now incorporated in the famous Hagley Park. As you enjoy visiting Hagley Park in Christchurch, you will find its history intriguing.

History of Hagley Park in Christchurch

Hagley Park was laid as a buffer between the farm of the Dean family and the new township of Christchurch. However, later it was included as part of laying the city. Hagley Park in Christchurch was named after the country estate of Lord Lyttelton, chairman of the Canterbury Association. It was later designated as a public park. Hagley Park in Christchurch, which in the 1850s, consisted of scrubs and swamps, was chosen as site for forming a Botanic Garden by the Canterbury Horticultural and Acclimatisation Society in 1864. For that, the area of the Government Domain was used along with the plants introduced there. Hagley Park in Christchurch has an avenue of Oriental plane trees in the North Park, pines in the northeast corner and near the swamp later transformed into Victoria Lake.

Later, even a nursery was established in Hagley Park in Christchurch so that plants such as olive, tobacco, mulberry and arrowroot and different medicinal plants could be cultivated and distributed to other parts of the city. By the end of the 19th century, some parts of Hagley Park in Christchurch and the Government Domain, were given away to Christ's College. Later some more parts were given to Christchurch Hospital, roads, sports or for grazing. The South Park of Hagley Park in Christchurch, chose for the Great Industrial Exhibition in 1906, for which ahuge area of 116 acres of North Hagley Park, was demarcated. Even buildings were founded next to Lake Victoria.

Even now, Hagley Park in Christchurch is used for organizing circuses, functions and public open-air concerts. Considered to be a treasure island of woodlands, open spaces and lush greenery, even sports and other recreational programs are held here.
