Located in the Canterbury region of New Zealand, Christchurch has got some memorable sightseeing places. Among all the notable places the one which was born to commemorate a historical event in the Christchurch calendar is the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Christchurch became the home town of the British in 1850. They made the initial plans of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and gradually laid out what came to be known as the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Features of Christchurch Botanic Gardens - The Christchurch Botanic Gardens was officially inaugurated on July 9th, 1863. The planting of an English Oak tree marked the birth of the garden and also became a symbol to commemorate the solemnization of the marriage vows of Prince Albert and Princess Alexandria of Denmark. - The total area of the Garden comprises 30 hectares. A large portion of the garden resides within the loop of the Avon River. It was not before 1863 that the wetland areas in the garden were transformed into flowering areas and the Botanic gardens became home to some of the rare species of plants in the whole of New Zealand. - The entire Christchurch Botanic Gardens is divided into several gardens each dedicated to a special purpose. The Herb Garden which was started in 1986 has plants which are used for medicinal and culinary purpose. - The Rock Garden is notable for the all the year round flowering plants. The Heather Garden on the other hand comprises of large numbers of Ericas and Callunas. - The Water Garden at the Christchurch Botanic Gardens is famous for the shrubs. But what catches the eye is the Rose Garden with its awesome collection of 250 varieties of rose. - A special part in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens is demarcated to rear up native plants of New Zealand. - The Christchurch Botanic Gardens was kept under the control of the Christchurch Domains Board till 1946. But owing to financial crisis the Board was dissolved and the garden was placed under the Christchurch city Council. In the present scenario, all the decisions regarding the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are taken by the Botanical Services Team of the Green Space Unit of Christchurch City.
