Christchurch Cathedral in New Zealand

New Zealand - Auckland - Christchurch - Queenstown - Wellington
Christchurch Cathedral in New Zealand is the most popular church of the country and an ideal representation of the city. The city of Christchurch developed around the Cathedral. The city was built around a Cathedral on the lines of Christ Church, Oxford. The planners of the Canterbury Association along with four vessels arrived in Lyttelton harbour in 1850. The mosaics on the tiled floor of the cathedral bear the names of the early settlers. Six years later the arrival of the first Bishop of Christchurch, Henry Harper added new momentum to the Cathedral project. The foundation stone was finally laid on a rainy day in 1864. The construction work was stalled for almost a decade owing to lack of funds. The nave of the cathedral was finally completed in 1881 and unveiled amidst colorful celebrations. Choral music, daily worship and bell ringing practiced from that year still continue to usher in devotees to this day. It is a must see on sightseeing tours to Christchurch.
