New Zealand is a friendly country and the natives are warm, polite people, albeit a shade reserved. The tourists and visitors of this country are expected to behave in a similar demeanor. Rude boastful individuals are frowned upon. Do remember to dress smartly, though a bit conservatively. The atmosphere at restaurants and such social hubs are easy and relaxed. Tipping is neither conventional not essential. However, you are welcome to offer a tip in case the service has been exceptionally good. New Zealanders lay great emphasis on correct pronunciation of Maori words and names. The Tapu or sacred areas such as meeting places or households or Marae must be treated with utmost reverence. Do remember to remove footwear before entering these. The dining area and food preparation area of Maori households too are not to be touched with unclean hands. If you plan to take pictures of these Marae structures do ensure you seek permission before hand. Also do remember to avoid using the "V for victory" gesture and at all times abstain from referring to either North or South New Zealand islands as mainland as this offends the sensibilities of the inhabitants. Do remember to read up on New Zealand before visiting the nation and do not refer to the Kiwis as Australians by mistake. The New Zealanders fiercely guard their individuality.
