The Helly Hansen Cape Brett Challenge is a unique race held in New Zealand every year. The wilderness and physical features of the country has been made good use off by this sporting event. Two different trail runs are organized every year. Called Ultimate Direction, a 15 km trial run brings out the best in serious runners and adventure enthusiasts. The theme 35 km event, after which the Challenge is styled, is meant for the veteran and experienced trail runners. Starting the run from the Rawhiti (Bay Of Islands) Camping Ground, the marathon to Cape Brett and back is quite a demanding one involving 1700 meters of vertical climbing and orienteering. The breath taking scenic destinations and historic sites enroute are preserved as the participants are forbidden from littering in these areas. The natural obstacles and craggy terrain pose a serious challenge to the fitness of even the best off- road runners. The participants are obliged to carry their climbing equipment, water, survival and first aid kits. The spectacular views enroute are probably the greatest reward the runners can be awarded. 100 participants are expected to enter the 350 km event and about 250 participants will partake in the 15 km run. The maximum time every participant will be provided to cover the 35 km distance is 6 hours while the winners are expected to cover the course in about 4 to 4 ½ hours. Prize distribution and awards are scheduled to be held that very evening at Rawhiti Camping Ground itself. In 2007 the event is scheduled to be held on Saturday 21st April 2007 and the registration will be done on a first come first serve basis. The challenge of the task, the beauty of the locales and the prestige of winning the prize is a dream every participant covets.
