Wellington's Westpac Stadium is situated on Waterloo Quay, where the New Zealand International Sevens, Wellington tournament has been played. The stadium accommodates 34,500 energized fans for two enthralling days of rugby, costumes and carnival atmosphere.

New Zealand International Sevens, Wellington incorporates 16 international teams contending for points, which head towards the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens series and the IRB series consists of eight tournaments. Under the laws of the game of rugby this tournament is played with some Sevens alternatives which are created by the IRB. The 16 teams are dividing into 4 pools. Pool matches are played on the first day of the tournament on a round robin basis. For wins, losses and draws, the points are presented and the points head towards the final points tabulation of every team. After the conclusion of all the pool matches in first day, the first and second positioned teams in each pool steps forward to the Cup Championship. The third and fourth positioned teams of each pool steps forward to the Bowl Championship. These games are played on second day and all teams are entered in a knockout phase. The winners of each game entered in semi finals and followed by finals. The champion team of the Tournament, known as New Zealand International Sevens, Wellington has moved during all their games on day two with no losses.

The each team of New Zealand International Sevens, Wellington consists of 12 players. Seven players are on the field during the match and five players are on reserve bench. Every game continues for 2 x 7 minute halves with a 2 minute half time and the final game of the tournament is 2 x 10 minute halves. The champion of the New Zealand leg wins the local tournament trophy. In 2006, Fiji won the tournament though New Zealand had held this for the past three years.
