Catlins, is a very scantily populated region which is notable for its scenic landscape and also house the rainforest which is home to different varieties of birds , many of which are endangered now. The place undergoes occasional wild weathers and the sea adjacent swells up to form huges waves as a result of which it's a paradise for surfers. Ecotourism is the buzzword in New Zealand, and this place is renowned for it. The region has some twevehundred people living in the area. Catlins is not a place where you can find notable architectural wonders or very flashy shopping malls to freak out. But this a place close to the nature's bosom. One gets to see some lovely animals on Catlins coast. The New Zealand Fur seals, Hookers Sea Lions, Southern Elephant seals, can be seen on this coast. Ever thought of seeing penguins right infront of your eyes, and that too a yellow eyed Penguin called Hoiho. If not then start dreaming about them. Because next time when you will be in New Zealand take some time off and visit this picturesque coast to catch a glimpse of them along with Mollymawks, Australasian Gannets, herons, stilts, godwits and oystercatchers. Birdwatchers, this is the ultimate destination for you all. Come equipped with a camera, otherwise you will be at loss. Karakiri, Yellowheads, Tui , Fantail and lots more endangered species are found here. A large variety of fishes and exotic fauna are also there . Transport is not that good, except the State Highway 1, which links it to the major cities, The Government of the place takes well care of the tourists.
