Each of the abovementioned subjects has a themed gallery allocated for them. The Southern Land section explains the origin of the people, their culture and their way of living. You will also find the largest fossil of New Zealand , the Shag Point Plesiosaur, which is a serpent like creature. The widest variety of moa skeletons will definitely catch your attraction. Also delve deep and find why these exquisite birds became extinct.
The people of the land section nestles some of the wonderful crafted objects of ivory, greenstone and wood on display including the pounamu treasures which are heirlooms of Ngai Tahu families. The ornate waka or the canoe and the daily activities of the tribe like fishing , hunting and gardening are explained with reference to the deities they worshipped
The masks of the Pacific Cultures are simply incredible. The Melanesian Gallery has some of the wonderful artifacts used by the people of Fiji and New Guinea region.
The multihued People of the world Gallery has ancient Greek Potteries , Egyptian sculptures, Buddhist relics, Chinese snuff bottles , African bronze statuettes and other astounding articles on display.
