Pohatu Penguin Habitat New Zealand
New Zealand - Auckland - Christchurch - Queenstown - Wellington
This wildlife zone is very sensitive and hence small guided groups are led into the breeding colony of the penguins. In fact the best time to visit these non-flying species of birds is the breeding season (September and January) when they temporarily from the sea. Francis and Shireen Helps of Pohatu Marine Reserve have done a great job over the past decade by conserving these endangered species of White-flippered penguins from the predators. You can watch their activities very closely and study the activities of the penguins by monitoring them continuously. You can have a better view of the Yellow Eyed Penguins during the evenings as they run on the shore. Apart from the penguins you may also watch various species of insects and reptiles endemic to this region.
Explore the cragged shoreline by kayaking or snorkeling is very delightful. However the shingle road to Pohatu is narrow and steep and is only recommended for four-wheel drive vehicles!
