The region of Wai - O- Tapu is connected with geothermal activities from more than a million years. After the devastation of the Pink and White terraces in the eruption of Mt. Tarawera , Wai-o-Tapu became the new Wonderland of New Zealand because of the existence of the biggest silica terrace here, which is the topmost in the southern hemisphere. The place is apt for a geothermal park for its unique landscape. Wai- o-tapu has such excellent geysers and steam discharge because under the earth's crust there is supposed to be a system of streams heated by the magma, which were the remnants of the earlier eruptions.
Tourists come flocking to the Wai- O- Tapu Wonderland after the 1900's when accommodation facilities were made available near this geothermal park. This scenic reserve is maintained by the Department of Conservation in New Zealand. The three walking trails of the park is so designed as to give you the feel of being in the bosom of nature. This park makes us realize the necessity to preserve the natural wealth and encourage eco tourism worldwide in an attempt to aware the common people.
