The geothermal region encompassing the Wairakei Village stretches from the geyser lands of Rotorua almost one hour north to the volcanoes, which is an hour south of Lake Taupo. Wairakei thermal parks are within the Waiora Valley, a culturally significant place of distinct culture for the Maori people. The area has gone undergone some big changes in the past 200 years, some natural, some created by human force. In the year of 1886, Mount Tarawera belched out bursting into two parts producing large mass of ash covered area. The Maori people for the geothermal properties recognize the Waiora valley. They used it for the revival of sick people and used it as a tract for wars. Recently there are several man made terraces made with innovative colors where previously only Pink and White ruled now their place is taken up by the Blue and multicolored terraces.
