From the Coast Road, get to Catchpool Valley that lies 12 km south of Wainuiomata in the Hutt Valley. From here, it’s a short walk along Oronogorongo Track to Butcher Track.

Features of Butcher Track, Wellington
  -  Butcher Track is located in the Catchpool Valley in the popular Rimutake Forest Park leading to the magnificent Oronogorongo Valley and its walks.
  -  You can enter the track after walking about 10 min along the Oronogorongo track and return the same way. To make it more fun, take Cattle Ridge track on your return on to the Oronogorongo River.
  -  Right at the end of your trek, be rewarded with magnificent views of Wellington Harbor.
  -  There are a variety of places where you can camp on your way. You can stay in one of the many camping huts too.
  -  The place abounds with beautiful spots for picnics.
  -  The trek is moderate to difficult and takes two hours altogether.
Things to Remember
  -  Butcher Track is pretty steep and rough. So if you have moderate to high-level backcountry skills, this is the track for you!
  -  You should have navigation and survival skills, along with the usual backcountry skills.
  -  Be prepared to cross rivers on your trek
  -  The Coast Road gates open at 8 am and close at dusk, so time your trek accordingly.
  -  Equip yourself with a pair of sturdy hiking boots.
  -  Mountain biking can be done on some of the tracks.
