New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, led the way for the establishment of softball as a popular sport in the country. Softball contests in Wellington began to be formally organised from 1937-38 onwards, leading to the founding of the Wellington Softball Association in 1937.

From Wellington, the interest in softball slowly spread throughout New Zealand. The New Zealand Softball Association was formed in 1938. This association came to have affiliations with the American Softball Association and in turn, with New Zealand’s provincial associations.

Wellington City Council has numerous spacious sports grounds for playing softball along with other games. These are some of Wellington’s parks that have facilities for softball:

Amazon Softball Club Inc. is a lesbian only softball club in Wellington, affiliated to the Wellington Softball Association, and has been running for over 30 years now. Wellington is very supportive of New Zealand’s men’s only national softball team, Black Sox, and often celebrates the national softball team’s victory in grand style.
