In 1972 John Sinister took the initiative, almost single handedly, to establish the Staglands Wildlife Reserve near Wellington. The park started off with a few ragged enclosures and a vision to promote conservation of wildlife in the region. From the time of its establishment the park till date the park has witnessed sea change in the infrastructure and many exciting features have been added. The park punctuates the essence of a blend of nature and human relationship in total freedom. The theme of the park instills a feel of oneness to every visitor. Staglands is considered to be a one man army product with his passion to experience the nature at its best. The 10 hectare long park features the ultimate experience of wildlife with a difference. The land features natural bodies like streams, ponds, hills and gullies; created and developed over the years, portrays a strong emphasis on water in the area.. A special zone in the reserve called the old bush settlement gives the visitors an insight into the life of the early settlers of New Zealand.
