This beautiful house is completely made of kauri wood in the year 1904. This is however, now hemmed in by high-rise buildings. The mansion, Antrim House, Wellington was built by Thomas Turnbull for the shoe manufacturer Robert Hannah. There is a beautiful history behind the construction of this house. The house was constructed for Robert Hannah who is the founder of Hannah's footwear company. Paying a visit to the capital city of Wellington and not making a trip to Antrim House, Wellington would nothing but leave your New Zealand trip an incomplete one. This is considered as one of the favorite tourist attractions of this capital city. Robert Hannah was one of the most successful businessmen of his time. Antrim House, Wellington was named after the county of Robert Hannah’s birth. Even at that time the magnificent mansion had all the latest conveniences including gas, electric light and bathrooms. In fact these are the things which people watch while come to this spot. The house was designed in Italianate style by the firm of Thomas Turnbull & Son. Thomas Turnbull & Son designed many other notable Wellington buildings and mansions. Once you are in the house, you will find magnificent kauri paneling and staircase, stained glass windows (all different) and ornate ceilings by Wunderlich of Sydney. In the grounds are a stable block and conservatory. In 1979 Antrim House was given to the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, who uses it as their headquarters.
