The Pencarrow Lighthouse, Wellington was the earliest permanent lighthouse in New Zealand. This white, octagonal cast iron tower first lit on 1 January 1859.The lantern roof of this tower is black. Pencarrow Lighthouse was run by only female lighthouse-keeper of New Zealand Mrs Mary Jane Bennett. The cast iron tower was made in England and in 1859, it put up on Pencarrow Head, at the way in to Wellington Harbour. Pencarrow Lighthouse, Wellington is incorporated in Wellington's Eastern Harbour Regional Park and brochures accessible from the Wellington i-SITE Visitor Centre or the Wellington Regional Council.
In 1859, the tower of Pencarrow Lighthouse, Wellington was established and it was replaced by Baring Head Lighthouse in 1935. The light, initially colza oil, and then kerosene, was discontinued in 1935.
New Zealand Historic Places Trust preserves the Pencarrow Lighthouse, Wellington and this lighthouse is reachable by a comfortable 8 km walk from Eastbourne. Eastbourne is situated 20 minutes drive from Downtown Wellington. Pencarrow Lighthouse, Wellington is popularly known as Pencarrow Head Lighthouse.
