The Spinks Cottage, Wellington was originally constructed between 1858 and 1863 on a large section neighbouring the St John's Church, and the construction is harmonized with the design of its period. The first owner of this cottage was a settler storekeeper William Spinks, whose family later utilized it as a school and a home. After the death of Spinks', this cottage was sold to the church and it became the home of the church officer. Since the early days, a Sunday School was attached to St John's Church. After a fire in 1884, there was a necessity for a larger building. Consequently, late in 1884, a neighboring property was bought including an early colonial house called Spinks Cottage, Wellington. In 1967, Spinks Cottage, Wellington was refurbished and started acting as a part of a small church hostel for the students of Victoria University of Wellington. Early in the 1980s, for the sake of church redevelopment this cottage was moved, expenses being met by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. At present, Spinks Cottage, Wellington is situated alongside Dixon Street, which is refurbished and has received a B classification from the Historic Places Trust. Only the verandah of this small cottage is new, though in the course of its life. Downstairs rooms of Spinks Cottage, Wellington are available by booking through the Church Office situated at the bottom of Troup House. At present, this cottage mainly used as a youth centre.
