In 1840, soon after the first colonizers arrived in Wellington, a group of Presbyterians built a church named St Andrews, which was situated on what is at present known as Lambton Quay. The Reverend John Moir arrived from the Free Church of Scotland in the early 1850s, to handle a group of Presbyterians at a new church called Willis St Church built on the corner of Willis and Dixon Streets. This Church was too small to accommodate the parishioners, and in 1874, it was finally demolished in 1875 it was replaced by the St John's Church, Wellington. In 1984, this new church was demolished by fire along with the adjacent Sunday School. A larger church and schoolroom were planned at that time, including the section occupied by William Spinks. Well-known architect Thomas Turnbull designed the present St John’s Church, Wellington, which was opened in 1885, including seating for 800, in a parish with 360 communicant members. During 1911, the parish had 700 communicant members. Nowadays many of the members and people, who worship at St John's Church, come from the suburbs. The present St John's church, Wellington building is a landmark for more than one hundred years and the parish members are very proud of this architectural jewel in the hub of the city. It was built in the colonial timber Gothic style and the tower is separated into three storeys, a foyer where morning teas can be held after Sunday services, a staircase landing and a bell chamber.
