First held in 1997, the Wellington International Jazz Festival is currently considered nationally and internationally as most innovative jazz festival in New Zealand. Introducing the finest music from all over the globe and New Zealand jazz, thousands of people are entertained annually in different venues throughout the Arts Capital. Local musicians established the Wellington International Jazz Festival to lift the profile of jazz as an existing art form in New Zealand and to receive international jazz musicians to Wellington. This Festival confronts the boundaries of the jazz genus and provides a platform for collaboration between local and international musicians. It allows audiences the opportunity to feel the wide variety that jazz has to present in a mix of free and ticketed concerts, performances and workshops. For nine years, the Wellington International Jazz Festival is presenting exceptional kiwi jazz as well as the finest jazz from all over the globe. The audiences, who visited the Wellington International Jazz Festival from 2001 and 2002, will remember the excitement of the Jazz Festival at the Front room (then known as James Cabaret). The finest jazz clubs of New Zealand will join the international jazz clubs at the Front room and at other great locations.
