The Fell Locomotive Museum, Wellington in Featherstone, houses the sole Fell railway locomotive in the world, built in 1875 for the steep stretch of rail-line through the Rimutaka Forest Park. The locomotive, number H199, climbed 265m (869ft) up the 4.8km (3 mile) Rimutaka Incline using John Barraclough Fell's distinctive method of four grip wheels on a raised center rail. Although the locomotive is not in steam, and is driven by an electric motor, visitors can watch the internal as well as external motion.
