Wellington, a city that proudly proclaims to be the cultural and artistic center of New Zealand, is one of the major tourist attractions of the country. The Golder Cottage, Wellington used to be the residence of one John Golder (1849-1902) and his family. John Golder was a man with many skills, in that he was a house builder, wood turner, and even a furniture maker. He built this little cottage which consisted of two upstairs rooms, two downstairs rooms, and a verandah covered by a simple gable, shingle clad roof in 1876. The Golder Cottage, Wellington was lived in by the Golder family till 1985, after which came to be operated as a museum from 1990 onwards. There were as number of changes made to the cottage, and it was restored with, about three additions being made. The Golder Cottage, Wellington displays original furnishings, memorabilia and photographs of the Golder family, and is a historic house and museum rolled into one. Those who love to delve into the past of a nation will love visiting this place, as it transports them to an age in the past, and gives them a taste of what life was like in those times. The Golder Cottage, Wellington is open on Saturdays, and other public holidays, and the timings are 1:30pm – 4: 00pm. groups can however contact the authorities and make arrangements for visits at other times.
