The Wellington City Gallery, Wellington was the premier non-collecting exhibition based public art gallery in the whole of New Zealand, and established in 1980. Focusing on contemporary visual arts, architecture and different areas of designing, this museum features works by the avant-garde artists of New Zealand. The works may be painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, video, architecture, fashion design, furniture design, jewellery design, or even graphic design. Featuring no permanent collection as such, the museum hosts a number of constantly moving exhibits that sport the works of artists like Shane Cotton, Colin McCahon, Len Lye, Wim Wenders, Rosalie Gascoigne, and Tracey Emin.
The Wellington City Gallery, Wellington also has other features, such as the Michael Hirschfeld Gallery, which exclusively shows Wellington artists. There is also the extremely popular Nikau café, which makes Wellington’s best coffee. The museum also organizes free tours every weekend, apart from which there are attractive events like talks by international guest lecturers, talks by local artists, films, poetry and dance performances etc.
The Wellington City Gallery, Wellington remains open on all days of the year, excepting Christmas day, and the opening hours are # Monday to Sunday 10am - 5pm. Though admission charges may apply to major exhibitions, entry is normally free, and one may give donations if one wishes.
