The Wellington Tramway Museum, Wellington came to be in 1964, after the Wellington City Tramway system came to an end. The museum actually began as a non-profit organization whose aim was to preserve the tramcars as well as other items relating to the tramway system. Seven tramcars were brought in and kept here, and gradually there acme to be built a tram barn and workshop which has now undertaken the responsibility of the full body and mechanical restoration of the tramcars.

The Wellington Tramway Museum, Wellington presently has 3 tramcars in operation. These tramcars take passengers on a journey to the Memorial Gates at McKay's Crossing. The tours are extremely popular, especially on weekends. The tramcar also travels through the scenic coastal sand dunes of the Queen Elizabeth Park.

The Wellington Tramway Museum, Wellington is located in the Elizabeth Park, Paekakariki. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11 am to 4.30 pm. the museum remains closed on Christmas Day, though it is open on all other public holidays. It only operates the period between Boxing Day, on Dec 26th to Wellington Anniversary Day, sometime in late January.
