Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city has been blessed with several panoramic landscapes, particularly Bays. Each of the Wellington Bays possesses a unique character, different from the rest. Of these, Kio Bay, Wellington is one of the most popular water sports spots of New Zealand, especially windsurfing. A common sight on any given day at Kio Bay, Wellington includes windsurfers whipping around the harbor at high speed as they blow before Wellington's notorious nor'wester, kids playing around the bay, racing with each other around the bay's concrete reclaimed wall and some hardy souls enjoying themselves on a sturdy wave. If you get inspired to try it out yourself, you can rent a board too. This is usually possible in the summer months. If you are able to take your eyes off the enchanting sea, you will love to see the hardy homes perched on the hillside around the bay, some with unimaginable accesses that you would barely want to look at, let alone attempt! Kio Bay, Wellington is the windiest place in NZ, comprising of a large natural harbor opening out south into Cook Straight, which acts as a large wind tunnel for the southerly winds straight off the Antarctic. With favorable winds, a number of Windsurfing clubs have opened in the area. Other activities in the region include mountain biking, hang gliding, canoeing, sailing, walking/ hiking/ tramping, rock climbing and tours to surrounding museums and wineries. So come to Kio Bay, Wellington and enjoy yourself. For those who would like to stay here for time can choose to unpack in any of the numerous hostels present in the city or a camp in Lower Hutt.
