Muscat is the largest city and the capital of Oman. The History of Muscat dates back to the 1 st century AD when it was the concealed harbor from where frankincense was transported to Greece Rome and the Mediterranean. Khir Rouri was the center of trade which the Greeks called as Muscat. Vasco da gama the Portuguese explorer during his voyage to India landed in Oman and the news of the wealth reached Europe. The Portuguese returned in 1507 to take control over the region. However they were repulsed in the 1649 by Imam Sultan bin Saif. Internal strife broke the back of Muscat and signaled the Persians to invade and take control but only for a short time to be taken back by Ahmad Bin Said to be elected the Imam. The History of Muscat took a turn in 1913 when Taimur bin Faisal became the Sultan and renamed the territory as “Muscat and Oman” with the Sultan ruling Muscat and Oman by the Imam. In 1947 the Sultan defeated the Imam with British help and unified Oman. Sultan Qaboos Ibn Said Al said is ruling since 1970 in the same pattern as found in the Gulf Shaykhdom. The History of Muscat from the perspective of trade and commerce as well as tourism dates back to the fag end of the 15 th century when the famous Arab sailor Ahmed Bin Majid left a vivid description of its trade. Muscat as the port of Oman began to flourish due to its strategic location as a great commercial center. Ships unloaded and loaded itself with great variety of goods to be taken to Europe. This marked the arrival of the people of different origins who began to settle down and tried to assume power for controlling the trade. Muscat reached its highest prosperity under its first ruler Imam Ahmed Bin Said. It was under his peaceful regime that trade began to flourish and Muscat grew prosperous as it was made the capital of Oman. Muscat shares a very cordial relation with the western role today and plays a significant part in developing peace in the Gulf Region. The prevalence of peace in Muscat is one of the major factor that contributes to the development of Tourism in Muscat.
