Strange as it might sound, transportation in Muscat is limited to bus, and air
transport. Getting to Muscat by flight is made easy with the Seeb International
Airport being the hub of Gulf Air as well as Oman Air. The city is serviced by
Baiza buses which have been so called for the lower denomination of the Omani
Rial, the baisa - an adaptation of the Indian paisa. These buses are relatively
inexpensive and serve all the major roadways, as well as the wide and loose network
of smaller byways in the greater metropolitan area of Muscat. Unlike most of the
bus drivers in the Gulf, those in Muscat are indigenously Omani. There are microbuses
available to tourists - depending on whether they are private or engaged.
Taxis are run on a rate system that is negotiable. Although on several occasions,
the government had tried to initiate the usage of meters, the idea was repeatedly
abandoned. It was not until recent times that taxis were fitted with meters
so as to ensure effective transportation in Muscat. However, the traveler is
advised to discuss the fare before boarding. There are ample travel agencies
to travel around the city. They can assist you with a suitable package to enable
that your means and methods of transportation in Muscat are safe, sound and
secure.
Public transportation in Muscat is relatively inexpensive in terms of the services
rendered by vehicles in the major highways of the city. Europe has good air
access to Oman, with flights available on larger carriers between Oman and European
capitals and other major cities. Paved divided highways connect most of the
areas, so the condition of the roads is good. Traffic "roundabouts"
are used instead of the traffic lights, like they use in rotaries. Browse AsiaRooms.com
