The Salalah Airport holds a position of pride in the city of Salalah in Oman. Having commenced operations in 1977, the Salalah Airport is being upgraded on a regular basis to become an effective gateway to the Sultanate of Oman, after the Seeb International Airport. As of now, the Salalah Airport is used for the following purposes: - Domestic Airport - Alternative of the Seeb International Airport - Managing traffic to and from Africa and Muscat Flight Information Region - Cargo charters from African Airports to the Gulf States, and vice versa The Salalah Airport is near the coastal area and is located to the north-east of the Salalah city center. The Ground Services at Salalah Airport are maintained and regulated by the Oman Aviation Services Company. Maintenance of the Ground, also known as Ground handling, is carried out at any hour of the day. This is because the Salalah Airport works 24 hours of the day. The Salalah Airport has a proper functioning structure. A team of experts look after the safety of flights in the most scientific method available. All information including aeronautical, meteorological and air navigation, are collected and stored in the most convenient and the most scientific manner known to mankind. This ensures safety of flights, flying into and flying out of the Salalah Airport. All the information gathered and stored are then handed over to the Oman Air, Military and International Charter Operators. But the oldest service that the Salalah Airport is famous for is the air cargo mobility. Air cargo service is carried out both for imports and exports. The Oman Aviation Company looks into this as well. The Salalah Airport has seen an increase in air cargo from its base with every passing year. The year 1996 saw a record handling of an excess of 595 tons of air freight from the Salalah Airport. This is a concrete proof of the ever-expanding capacity of the Salalah Airport to manage air cargo and the steady improvement in its infrastructure. The Salalah Airport also boasts of the ability to park the largest aircraft in the aviation industry. It has 6 parking bays with capacities to hold some of the widest aircrafts in the world. Also, the Airport in Salalah has a helipad.
