If you are planning to visit the beautiful city of Baguio in Philippines, just don’t forget to pay a trip to the holy shrine at Lourdes Grotto, Baguio. The Lourdes Grotto is a Catholic shrine and a place of prayer located on Mirador Hill in the western part of Baguio. Inside the grotto is an image of Our Lady of Lourdes. You have to climb 252 steps to reach Lourdes Grotto. It offers you an excellent view of the whole Baguio city once you reach at the top of it. The grotto is a favorite pilgrimage site which remains crowded during Holy Week most especially during Holy Thursdays and Good Friday and on Sundays. You can drive a light vehicle through the winding, narrow and steep asphalt paved road to reach Lourdes Grotto. Devotees usually pray by lighting up a candle at an altar below the image and ask for the blessing of Virgin Mary. There are vendors at the shrine who will light up a candle for you if you want and say a prayer for you. Lourdes Grotto was constructed to commemorate the numerous visions of the Virgin Mary by a 14 year old French girl named Bernadette Soubirous. This incident occurred between February 11 to July 16 1858, in the town of Lourdes, southwest France. The visions were declared authentic by the Pope in 1862 and this led to the authorization of the cult of Our Lady of Lourdes. Near the Grotto you will see a strip of the Naguilian Road and a beautiful pictographic view of a part of the La Union province. When the sky is clear Lingayen Gulf and portions of the province of Pangasinan are also visible. The idle time to visit this place is early morning when there is no fog. You even can take photographs at that time.
