The central region of Philippines has a couple of islands known as Visayas and Cebu is one of the larger island. Cebu has a colonial past, at one point of time, this island was under Spanish rule. Ferdinand Magellan and an array of Spanish troops arrived in 1521AD and thus another Asian island started her identity as a colony of a European power and most of the native people converted to Christianity including the ruler. Because, the island was under Spanish occupation, the Spanish heritage is still very discernable. One such heritage which also doubles as a very important tourist attraction is Santa Nino Basilica, Cebu. Santa Nino Basilica, Cebu, is the first Asian Basilica and was built in 1740 AD. This Basilica also goes by the name of Basilica Minore de Santo Nino. This religious place is extremely popular and teems with devotees each desperately trying to catch a glimpse of Santa Nino statue. The statue was given to Queen Juana of Cebu by Magellan. Sunday masses in Filipino are a crowded affair, try to visit the Basilica on another day. The local people are very devout when it comes to attending The Mass. Specially on Sundays, people turn out on their Sunday best to attend the Church, you too can join, the locals will always welcome you.
