Corregidor Island in Manila is a small rock island that is located strategically
at the mouth of Manila Bay. The whole island is lush green with a variety of flowers
and orchids and few monkeys.
The Manila Corregidor Island became important in the World War II when the
Allied forces held it stop the Japanese forces from taking new grounds. The
island is also known as 'the Rock'. The significance of the island lies in the
fact that when the Japanese forces invaded the Philippines the Allied forces
carried out a delaying action. It was from the Corregidor Island that the Philippine
President Manuel Quezon and General MacArthur left for Australia.
History reveals that though Bataan fell on April 9 1942, the Philippine and
the American forces later surrendered the Corregidor after a tough fight when
their rations depleted. One can see the big guns, tunnels, the ruined buildings
that reminds one of the battleground.
Some of the important sites in the Manila's Corregidor Island is the Topside
section- that is the highest sector in the Island and also has the major gun
placements. The Pacific War Memorial was erected in honor of the Filipino and
the American soldiers who took part in the war. The other important structure
is the Eternal Flame of Freedom and provides the visitors a panoramic view of
the Manila Bay, the Bataan Peninsula and the Cavite coastline.
On the Middleside section where the elevation is between 100 to 400 feet lies
a number of landmarks, buildings and other structures. The Filipino-American

here.
