Fast Facts of Quiapo Fiesta in Philippines

Occasion of Quiapo Fiesta or Black Nazarene – 9th January
Specialty- The largest festival in Philippines

Quiapo Fiesta in Philippines also known as the Black Nazarene is initiated at the Quiapo Church in Quiapo, Manila from where it is taken up in the entire country. A life statue of the Nazarene from the 17th Century was made of blackwood in Mexico and then transported to the Philippines in a Spanish Galleon. Through this festival, the death and affliction of Christ is observed. People believe that if they touch the Black Nazarene, they will attain prosperity.

A huge procession is carried out on to the street where hundreds of Catholics participate in and walk in bare feet. The statue of Black Nazarene is also carried in the procession which passes through various parts of Quiapo on January 9 in 2004. Huge number of people from across Manila participate in this festival, which is considered to be the largest festival in the country. History says that the statue of Nazareth was placed in Saint John the Baptist Church in Quiapo since 1787. This has remained the tradition for two centuries that the statue is placed on a gilded carriage every January and carried through every part of Quiapo.
