Philippines comprises of 7,107 islands encompassing a total land area of approximately
300,000 square kilometers (116,000 sq. mi). It lies between 116° 40' and
126° 34' E. longitude, and 4° 40' and 21° 10' N. latitude, and borders
the Philippine Sea on the east, on the South China Sea the west, and the Celebes
Sea on the south. The island of Borneo is located a few hundred kilometers southwest
and directly north of Philippines. The Moluccas and Sulawesi are to the south,
and Palau is to the east of Philippines beyond the Philippine Sea.
The islands of Philippines are generally divided into three groups which comprises
of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.Manilla is the capital of Philippines and it
is also the second largest city after its suburb Quezon City. Philippines mostly
consist of mountainous islands which are densely covered with tropical rainforest
and Mount Apo on Mindanao at 2,954 meters is acknowledged as the highest point
in Philippines. This country lies on the northwestern fringes of the Pacific
Ring of Fire and thus experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activities.
The nation of Philippines also lies within the typhoon belt of the Western Pacific
and approximately 19 typhoons strike per year.
