Provinces of Philippines

The nation of Philippines is segmented into 81 provinces which in turn are again sub divided into cities and municipalities but the National Capital Region, which consist the capital city Manila, is not divided into provinces.
Province is the primary local government unit in the Philippines and provinces are grouped into 17 regions based primarily on geographical, cultural, and ethnological characteristics. The provincial government is headed by a governor and the province is further divided into one or more congressional districts for the purposes of legislative representation and the governor is also the chief executive of the province.
Each and every district also has board members in the Provincial Board. Under the governor are the various provincial departments such as the Administration, Legal Office, Information Office, Engineering Office, and Treasury Office.
The governor is elected for a term of three years and may be elected for a maximum of three terms. The provincial department heads are also appointed by the governor. Last October 30, 2006 the people of the first district of Maguindanao approved the creation of the new province, Shariff Kabunsuan.
