University of Santo Tomas in Philippines or the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, The Catholic University of the Philippines is known as one of the most populous Catholic universities in the world. A private Roman Catholic university by the Order of Preachers in Manila, University of Santo Tomas started functioning from April 28, 1611. Located in Sampaloc district, you will find many sovereign colleges, schools and institutes of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, functioning under this university. While the university now functioned from the walled city of Intramuros earlier, other campuses will soon function from Sta. Rosa, Laguna, General Santos City and Negombo, Sri Lanka.


History of University of Santo Tomas in Philippines says that Reverend Miguel de Benavides, O.P., the third Archbishop of Manila, who came to the Philippines on the first Dominican mission in 1587, donated his property worth 1,500 pesos so that a seat of higher learning could be established. After a series of measures, a full fledged university- Colegio de Santo Tomas formally called Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas, The Catholic University of the Philippines, came into existence on November 20, 1645, which today is known as University of Santo Tomas in Philippines.
