Al khobar, also known as Khobar is a big city which is located in the eastern part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The population of this large city is 165,799 as per the 2004 census. It forms part of the greater Dammam metropolitan area along with Dhahran, which together have a population of over a million. All the urban centers are connected by the King Fahd International Airport. The city residents of the original downtown area are mainly Saudi nationals and non-Western expats. Earlier, Khobar was a small port on the Persian Gulf, a fishing village inhabited mainly by the tribe members of Al Dawasir. After the discovery of oil in the 1930s, Al Khobar was transformed into a major commercial and shopping center and also, an industrial port. In modern times, the larger port of Dammam has taken over most shipping activities for the Eastern Province, and oil is exported through the dedicated Saudi Aramco port of Ras Tanura. As a result, the Al Khobar has metamorphosed and extended its waterfront along the Gulf with Restaurants in Al Khobar, eateries, and family Beaches in Al Khobar.
The Half Moon Bay State Beach Visitor Center remains open on Saturdays and Sundays. Entry to the Visitor Center is free of charge. The Visitor Center is entirely open to disables. Strong rip currents can pull even the most skilled swimmers off shore.
