Jeddah is an ancient town seeped into Islamic traditions and beliefs. The history of this city in Saudi Arabia can be traced back to 2,500 years. The strategic location of the city makes it very popular among the Muslim pilgrims for whom Jeddah is the gateway to the twin holy cities of Mecca and Medina. But what attracts the leisure travelers to this ancient city of Saudi Arabia are the innumerable spots of sightseeing in Jeddah. One of the most prominent tourist attractions in the city is the Eve Cave in Jeddah. Jeddah derives its name from the cave of Eve, a prominent tourist attraction in the country. The ancient city which lies close to the Red Sea derives its name from the Arabic term 'jaddah' that literally means 'matriarch' and being the resting place of Eve, the first woman created by God the name of the city came to be Jeddah. According to the Arabic legends, when God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, Adam fell in modern day Sri Lanka while Eve landed at the coast of the Red Sea. And later on Adam was buried in Mecca while Eve, considered the 'jaddah' or the mother of mankind was buried in the city of Jeddah. From thereon the Eve Cave in Jeddah has been a prominent fixture in the Jeddah Travel Guide. Though a lot has been speculated among the historians regarding the actual spot of the Eve Cave at Jeddah, the beliefs of the pilgrims and travelers bring a number of them to this ancient city. But in 1975 the sudden growth in the number of Muslim pilgrims visiting the place resulted in the sealing of the Eve Cave in Jeddah by the religious authorities argued that it was against Islamic traditions to pray at the Tomb of Eve.
