Oil was first discovered in 1930 but it was not until the 1970s that the country became the largest oil producer of the world. This boosted the economy to a large extent. It is a member of OPEC and in 1999 after the Gulf War Saudi Arabia was most instrumental in hiking the prices of oil and petroleum products. Recently in 2000 it joined the World Trade Organization.
