Shaw Cinemas
Shaw Organization was founded in 1924, the by Tan Sri Runme Shaw who was the son of a Shanghai textile merchant, Shaw Yuh Hsuen. Runme Shaw along with his brothers owned a film company known as Unique Film Productions that specialized in producing silent movies. Aiming to seek bigger business opportunities in the international cine market, Runme traveled to Singapore. Shaw Cinemas, Singapore initially known as Hai Seng Company was established to not only produce their own films but also for the distribution and exhibition of movies made by other companies.
Slowly and steadily the Shaw Cinemas, Singapore grew in size and number. New offices were bought to keep pace with the expansion of the organization. Before the start of the Second World War, the organization bought the then office building on Robinson Road and also three adjoining buildings. The offices owned by the Shaw brothers were later named as the Shaw Chambers.
By the end of 1960s the Shaw Brothers Limited owned 35 companies that included 130 cineplexes all across Southeast Asia, 9 amusement parks and 3 production studios.
In the 1990s the Shaw Cinemas, Singapore expanded to include a 22-storey cine complex which houses shops, restaurants, fast food eating joints and eight screens.
Shaw Cinemas, Singapore in 2000 introduced e- ticketing in collaboration with Singapore Technologies which assisted the cine going population.
