The history of Singapore cannot be told without the chapter of British colonization. Singapore has stepped into modernity, but not without evidences of an erstwhile British rule. Istana in Singapore is one such remnant of that bygone era. Istana was built in the year 1867-69 under the instruction of Sir Harry Saint George. This wonderfully architect monument was assigned for the British high officials during the British Colonization era of Singapore. But after independence, the house was allotted as the government house where the President of Singapore resides. The uniqueness in the design had made Istana to stand out from the others. Istana is a significant tourist destination in Singapore and is well accessible for the tourists. The building remains open for the public five times a year. The palace is built on a nutmeg plantation with well-manicured garden. The architecture of the building has a classical touch with Victorian style architecture. 18th century Neo Palladian style was partly destroyed in the World War II, the ruin was renovated and this monument now got back its lost glory. The building was handed over to the Government of Singapore in the year 1959. The tourists can avail MRT and Orchard Road is the nearest station from Istana.
