Raffles Landing Site
The Landing Site of Raffles in Singapore, where the statue of Sir Stamford Raffles, the founder of the city of Singapore stands, marks the spot where Raffles is believed to have first stepped on shore in the year 1819. Singapore was at time a small village of fishermen. But Sir Raffles, who was a liberal and beneficent agent of the East India Company, on seeing the place realized that Singapore had immense potential as a port. He purchased the island from the Sultan of Johor, invited the Chinese and the Indians to immigrate to the new town, and hence established the present multi-cultural society in Singapore.
The actual Raffles Landing Site in Singapore is located at the north of Boat Quay. The white marble replica of the statue of Sir Stamford Raffles is situated in the banks of Singapore River. There is also a black replica of the statue of Raffles positioned just outside the Victoria Theatre Concert Hall.
The Singapore Raffles Landing Site is just a short walk from the Raffles Place MRT Station.
