Sago Street (Street of the Dead) in Singapore

The Sago Street (Street of the Dead) in Singapore is located in the China Town area in Singapore. It has been named as the Sago Street because way back in the 1840's, one could find a large number of Sago factories here. It was infamous because of the large number of brothels that were located here.

However towards the end of the twentieth century, the prostitutes abandoned the area. It was then that the Sago Street in Singapore underwent a massive transformation. Presently at the Sago Street in Singapore, you will find a large number of shops and bars. The unique characteristic of the Sago Street in Singapore is that on one side of the street there are a large number of pushcarts that sell various items.

It needs to be clarified that although the Sago Street is referred to as the Street of the dead, Chinese Death Houses are actually located in the Sago Lane. Sago Lane runs parallel to the Sago Street. The Death Houses consisted of a living area on the first floor and a funeral parlor on the ground floor. All those people who were supposedly passing the last days of their lives were kept here.

The Tua Peh Kong Temple located in Sago Street in Singapore is also well worth a visit.
