Busan Bridge & Yeongdo Bridge

Bridges joining the mainland of South Korea with many islands separated from each other by straits and bays are an important feature of the beautiful Busan. In many cultures worldwide bridges are admired for aesthetic beauty seen as architectural wonders and a means of connection both literally and symbolically. Busan Bridge & Yeongdo Bridge posed as the superb blend of both style and functional value is some of the busiest bridges of South Korea. Thousands of people pass through these two bridges everyday on their way to Yeongdo Island and way back to mainland Busan.

Yeongdo Bridge was constructed in 1934 by the Japanese and it is the first bridge to connect downtown Busan with Yeongdo Island. Till its reconstruction in 1966, Yeongdo Bridge was also the only bascular bridge of South Korea. The unique design of the bridge was equipeed with drawing back facility making it flexible enough to be moved whenever needed. A movable part of the bridge used to rise to let the large vessels pass through safely.

When Seoul lost its ground to communist power during the Korean War in 1951, this bridge became the meeting point of the refugees. The collective sorrow and gloom of war ravaged refugees found motivation in the famous song "Keep Your Heart Strong” sung by a renowned singer named Hyeon In. A statue was erected at one end of the bridge in the honor of his memory.

The Busan Bridge was built in 1976 to mark the 100th anniversary of the opening of Busan Port. This majestic red bridge was built in indigenous technology stands as the symbol of the unprecedented growth of Busan Port.
