Dongbaekdo Island, Busan endowed with verdant greenery is nature’s gift to visitors. Away from the hustle and bustle of city this tranquil island is the perfect place to admire the seascape, sensuous lushness of thick pine and camellia groves. As you enter into this strip of land stretching out into the sea the island gradually unfolds its unspoiled beauty. Jagged cliffs scattered throughout the island account much for the wild beauty of Dongbaekdo Island, Busan.

The name of this island owes its origin to Dongbaek trees that grows here in abundant. The island also found its name indicated in popular folklore. It is said that when Choe Chi-Won, a scholar renowned for his literary pursuits during the Silla Dynasty was passing by Dongbaekdo, the island offered a wonderful panorama of Haeundae Beach. Charmed by the engaging beauty of the beach he carved his pen name “Hae-un” on a rock and the beach was named after him. A monument and a statue of Choe-Chi-Won built at the top of the island still remind visitors about his affinity to this island.

Once this island was completely separated from the mainland by the surrounding sea. Now one end of the Dongbaekdo Island, Busan is attached to the mainland area. Lying in close proximity of Haeundae beach, the island is a popular climbing destination for its trekking and hiking trails. Declared by Busan Tourism Organization as Tourist Site No.46, Dongbaekdo Island is beautifully adorned with Dongbaek Park and a 2.5 m high statue of a mermaid. In fine weather A Japanese Island named Daema (Tsushima) is clearly visible from Dongbaekdo Island, Busan.
