Geumjeong sanseong Mountain Fortress Busan

The majestic fotress of Geumjeong sanseong stands aloof on the summit of Mt. Geumjeongsan reminding Koreans of its glorious past. Permeated with the spirit of gallantry, patriotism the exotic charm of this mountain fortress attracts thousands of visitors.

The legendary fort was named as Dongrae Mountain Fortress earlier. The actual date of fortification can not be traced back exactly. The fort is assumed to be built during it is presumed to be built in the medieval Three Kingdoms Era marking the fierce antagonism among Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla dynasties.After Japanese invasion in 1592 and the ravage done by Manchu invaders in following years the governor of Gyeongsang-do ordered the reconstruction work to prevent any such attack in future. The construction work finally completed in 1707.Due to lack of proper maintenance Geumjeong sanseong fortress eventually fell and was restored during the reign of King Sunjo. The West Gate was built that year and the other gates during the following years.

Today only 4 Km of the walls, the four gates and four observation towers are remaining. The South Gate is the most visited part while the West Gate, though impressive can be reached with much effort. Geumjeong sanseong, the largest Korean fort played a significant role in Korean History and was duly accredited as the national historic site in 1972.

The winding mountain trail leading to the fortress offers a breathtaking view of mountain panorama. You can also opt for a cable car running to the top of the mountain from Geumgang Park below.

How to Go to Geumjeong sanseong Fotress

From Busan Station, take Busan subway line No.1 and get off at Oncheonjang (30min. required) and then transfer tocity bus No. 203 for Sanseong at the entrance of Guemgang Botanical Garden and get off at Beomesa Temple. (50min. required). Or you can take city bus No. 90 to Beomeosa Temple. Hike one hour to the fortress.
