Oryukdo Islets
South Korea - Daegu - Incheon - Jeju - Seoul - Daejeon
Oryukdo Islets are a string of six islands in the bay of Busan near the shoreline at Seungdomal. The geological features of the islands indicate that Oryukdo islands were attached to the mainland peninsula in prehistoric time. In course of time these islands were disconnected from the mainland due to the erosion caused by ocean wave. The term “Oryukdo” meaning five or six islands signifies the uncertainty people face while counting the exact number. Low tide reveals the causeway between Bangpaesom and Solsom islands making it appear as a single island whether high tide separates them by drowning the causeway.
Songossom is the smallest but the highest island among the six resembles an owl in shape. A large cave with water dripping from its ceiling is the main attraction of Goolsom the biggest one. Deungdaesom the farthest island flaunts a lighthouse beaconing the way to Busan Port. Except Deungdaesom, the other five islands are uninhabited.
In earlier days sailors used to observe sacrifical rituals in order to navigate smoothly through the treacherous currents around the Oryukdo Islets. Embellished with bizarre cliffs Oryukdo islands are thought to be the gateway to Busan Port.
Wild and enigmatic, Oryukdo Islets can be a wonderful place to enjoy unspoiled scenic beauty. The islands are also popular destination for fishing.
