There are a total of 4.5 million trees along the streets and in the parks of the downtown area of Daegu. In order to maintain a green cover in the city, a conscious effort was made by the Korean Ministry of Environment to maintain around 50 square meters of park area per person in Daegu. According to the findings of a survey conducted in late 2001, Daegu has 126
of parks area, occupying 14.2% of its total area. In order to ascribe additional
value to its well-maintained green spaces, the city government has set up an
objective to reorganize its major parks as specialized theme parks such as historical
heritages, memorial parks, recreational zones athletic grounds, etc. One such
park is Daegu Arboretum Daegu Arboretum has been used as a sanitary landfill
by the city government, to restore the area. Here, visitors can enjoy its gardens
with giant cactuses, medicinal herbs, wild flowers, and potted plants. Ponds
with aquatic lives and groves with various kinds of trees are another attraction
